Driving from Zion, UT to Seattle, WA

Your nearly 1,100-mile journey from Zion National Park to Seattle takes you across some of the most dramatic terrain in the western United States. You'll begin by heading north from Zion on US-89, climbing out of the red rock country and into Utah's high plateaus before connecting to I-15 near Cedar City. From there, the route follows I-15 north through southwestern Utah and into Idaho, eventually merging onto I-84 as you enter the Pacific Northwest. This straightforward interstate corridor gives way to more scenic byways as you approach Washington, particularly along I-90 through the Cascade Range, where you'll experience one of the most visually striking stretches of the entire drive.

The landscape transforms dramatically along this route, beginning with Zion's iconic rust-colored canyons before transitioning to Utah's expansive high desert plateaus around 5,000 to 6,000 feet in elevation. As you continue northward through Idaho on I-84, you'll descend into the Snake River Plain, a relatively flat agricultural region that provides a stark contrast to your starting point. The most significant elevation and terrain changes occur in the final stretch through Washington, where I-90 carries you up and over the Cascade Range, featuring some challenging grades and tight mountain passes that demand attentive driving, particularly if you're traveling in winter months.

Along the way, you'll pass through several notable cities that make excellent stopping points: Beaver and Salina in Utah, Pocatello and Boise in Idaho, and Spokane in Washington before the final push toward Seattle. The drive offers a compelling mix of rural stretches—particularly through the Snake River Plain and eastern Washington—interspersed with brief urban passages that keep the journey varied and engaging.

Late spring through early fall represents the ideal window for this drive, when mountain passes are reliably clear and weather conditions stable. Winter travel is possible but requires caution, as I-90 over the Cascades can experience sudden snowfall and icy conditions. If you're flexible with timing, aim for September when summer crowds have dispersed but conditions remain favorable throughout.

The 1111-mile drive from Zion, Utah to Seattle, Washington takes approximately 18h 37m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.

Common Weather Hazards on This Route

  • Winter storms and heavy snowfall (November through April)
  • Black ice on mountain passes and bridges
  • Dense fog, especially during early morning hours
  • Extreme heat and dust storms in desert regions
  • Flash floods during monsoon season (July through September)

Seasonal Driving Considerations

Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges — afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.

Best Time to Drive Zion to Seattle

For long drives like this 1111-mile journey, planning is essential. Consider breaking the trip into segments if weather looks challenging. The best approach is to check conditions for multiple departure times using Route Outlook's optimizer, which considers weather at each point when you'll actually be there.

Driving Strategy

Covering 1111 miles from Zion to Seattle is a full-day or multi-day drive that requires advance planning. Break the route into manageable segments, planning fuel and rest stops every 2-3 hours. Weather that looks fine at departure may deteriorate significantly at the midpoint. Consider booking overnight accommodation if the forecast shows deteriorating conditions in the latter half. Route Outlook's segment-level weather data helps you identify exactly where and when conditions will change.

Pro Tip

Use Route Outlook's departure optimizer to find the best time to leave. Our 4D trajectory engine considers weather at each point along your route at the exact time you'll be there — not just at your destination.
