1. Route Corridor Analysis

We identify all active incidents within 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) of your planned route. This corridor approach catches incidents that might not be exactly on your road but could affect your drive--like an accident on a parallel highway that's diverting traffic onto your route.

2. Severity Classification

Not all incidents are equal. A disabled vehicle on the shoulder might cause minor rubbernecking delays. A multi-vehicle accident with road closure could add hours to your trip. We classify incidents by severity:

If you're driving in an area where Route Outlook doesn't show incident data, it's likely because the local DOT doesn't have a public data feed, or we haven't integrated it yet.

You can help expand coverage:

  1. Contact your state or provincial DOT and ask if they provide public 511 API access. Many departments have this data but haven't publicized it.
  2. CC us at [email protected] so we know there's demand and can prioritize integration.
  3. Let us know if you find a working 511 feed that we're missing--we're always looking to expand our sources.
