Driving from Hillsboro, OR to Kelowna, BC
Your journey from Hillsboro, Oregon to Kelowna, British Columbia spans roughly 341 miles and will take you approximately 6 hours and 49 minutes of driving time. You'll begin by heading north on US-26 through the lush Willamette Valley, then merge onto I-5 North toward Portland before continuing upward into Washington state. The primary route follows I-90 East as it cuts across Washington, eventually transitioning to US-395 North as you approach the British Columbia border. Once you cross into Canada near the town of Oroville, Washington, you'll join BC Highway 97, which carries you directly south into the Okanagan Valley and down to Kelowna.
The landscape transforms dramatically as you progress northward, shifting from the relatively flat agricultural plains of Oregon's Willamette Valley into the Cascade Range foothills and eventually the rolling terrain of eastern Washington. You'll experience significant elevation changes, particularly as you climb through the eastern Washington highlands before descending into the Okanagan's distinctive high desert environment. Notable cities along your route include Portland, where you'll navigate some urban driving, and the charming smaller communities of Spokane's periphery as you head northeast. The Okanagan Valley itself reveals striking geography with its long, deep lakes and semi-arid landscape dotted with vineyards and orchards.
Your drive includes both substantial interstate stretches and more scenic rural highway sections, requiring you to adjust your driving rhythm accordingly. The I-90 corridor through Washington involves moderate traffic, particularly near Seattle's orbit, while the latter portion on US-395 and BC-97 offers more open road and fewer congestion concerns. You'll encounter a mix of truck traffic and recreational travelers, especially during peak seasons.
For the most enjoyable driving experience, plan this route during late spring through early fall when mountain passes are clear and the Okanagan Valley is at its most beautiful. Winter travel requires caution due to potential snow and icy conditions at higher elevations, while spring can bring unpredictable weather. Early autumn offers ideal conditions with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and fewer summer tourists clogging the highways.
The 341-mile drive from Hillsboro, Oregon to Kelowna, British Columbia takes approximately 6h 49m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.
Common Weather Hazards on This Route

Seasonal Driving Considerations
Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges β afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.
