Driving from Kennewick, WA to Whistler, BC
Your journey from Kennewick to Whistler spans approximately 320 miles and takes roughly six and a half hours of driving time, making it an ideal day trip or the first leg of a longer Pacific Northwest adventure. You'll head north from Kennewick on I-90, merging onto US-395 North as you leave the Columbia Basin behind. The route then carries you through Washington's interior before crossing into British Columbia, where you'll transition onto Highway 1 and eventually Highway 99, which provides the final scenic approach into Whistler. This relatively straightforward routing makes navigation simple, though you'll want to budget extra time if you plan to stop at any of the charming communities along the way.
As you drive north from Kennewick, you'll notice dramatic changes in elevation and landscape. The drive begins in the high desert terrain of central Washington, characterized by sagebrush and rolling hills, before ascending into the Cascade Range foothills. Once you cross the Canadian border near Blaine, Washington, the scenery becomes increasingly lush and mountainous, with dense coniferous forests dominating the landscape as you approach the Sea-to-Sky corridor. This elevation gain means you'll climb from near sea level in Kennewick to over 2,000 feet by the time you reach Whistler, offering progressively more dramatic mountain vistas as you drive north.
You'll pass through several notable communities that offer convenient stops, including the city of Bellingham, Washington, which sits roughly midway through your journey and provides gas, food, and restroom facilities. Beyond Bellingham, the terrain becomes increasingly alpine, and you'll follow the scenic Sea-to-Sky Highway as it winds through British Columbia's coastal mountains toward Whistler. The drive is generally manageable year-round, though winter conditions between November and March can present challenges with snow and ice on mountain passes, particularly between Whistler and the US border. Spring through fall offers the most pleasant driving conditions, with summer providing long daylight hours and fall delivering spectacular mountain views as the aspen and larch trees change color.
The 320-mile drive from Kennewick, Washington to Whistler, British Columbia takes approximately 6h 23m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.
Common Weather Hazards on This Route
- Winter storms and heavy snowfall (November through April)
- Black ice on mountain passes and bridges

Seasonal Driving Considerations
Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges β afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.

Driving Strategy
