Driving from Salt Lake City, UT to Seattle, WA
Your journey from Salt Lake City to Seattle spans approximately 910 miles of diverse Pacific Northwest terrain, primarily following Interstate 90 north through Utah and Idaho before crossing into Washington. You'll begin by heading north from Salt Lake City on I-15, climbing out of the Salt Lake Valley and passing through the Wasatch Mountains before merging onto I-84 near Ogden. From there, you'll follow I-84 eastward as it winds through some of Utah's most dramatic canyon country, including the striking Echo Canyon and Weber Canyon. The route then continues into Idaho, where I-84 parallels the Salmon River for a scenic stretch before eventually connecting to I-90, which becomes your primary highway for the remainder of the drive into Washington.
As you progress northward through Idaho on I-90, you'll experience significant elevation changes and dramatic landscape transitions. The highway takes you through Coeur d'Alene, a charming mountain town nestled alongside a pristine alpine lake, offering a good midpoint stopping opportunity roughly six hours into your drive. Beyond Idaho, you'll cross into Washington and gradually descend toward the Spokane area, where urban sprawl gradually gives way to the transition zone between the Cascade Range's rain shadow and the verdant western valleys. The final stretch from Spokane to Seattle takes you across Washington's rolling landscape before climbing through the Cascade Mountains, where you'll experience some of the most significant elevation gain of the entire route.
The drive features distinct sections worth noting for practical planning: the initial Utah and northern Idaho segments involve considerable elevation gain with narrow canyon passages, while the eastern Washington stretch offers long, relatively straight sections perfect for maintaining consistent speed. The final approach into Seattle requires negotiating mountain passes and eventual urban traffic around the Puget Sound region, so plan to reduce your pace during daylight hours if possible. Spring through early fall offers the most pleasant driving conditions, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. Winter travel on this route demands caution, particularly through mountain passes in Idaho and Washington, where snow and ice frequently impact I-90 and can add significant time to your journey. Plan for 15 to 16 hours of actual driving time, factoring in fuel stops, meals, and brief rest breaks along the way.
The 910-mile drive from Salt Lake City, Utah to Seattle, Washington takes approximately 15h 15m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.

Seasonal Driving Considerations
Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges — afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.
