Driving from San Francisco, CA to Vancouver, BC
As you depart San Francisco and head north on Interstate 80, you're beginning one of North America's most rewarding long-distance drives, one that will carry you through three distinct regions before depositing you at the Canadian border. The route primarily follows I-5 northward through California and into Oregon and Washington, though you'll encounter several important transitions along the way. From the San Francisco Bay Area, you'll climb over the Sierra Nevada foothills before descending into the Central Valley, where the landscape transforms into vast agricultural flatlands. This stretch is largely straightforward driving through familiar terrain, but it sets the stage for the dramatic changes ahead as you continue north on I-5 toward Oregon.
Crossing into Oregon, the landscape begins its impressive metamorphosis as you leave the valley behind and approach the Cascade Range. You'll pass through Portland, Oregon's largest city and a vibrant urban center worth a brief stop, before the terrain grows increasingly mountainous and heavily forested. The elevation climbs noticeably as you traverse the Cascade passes, with stunning views of evergreen forests and distant volcanic peaks becoming your constant companions. Washington brings even more dramatic geography—you'll skirt past the Willamette Valley before heading toward Seattle, another major metropolitan area where urban driving requires attention before the landscape opens up again toward the Canadian border.
The final leg into British Columbia is particularly scenic, as you follow I-5 through the lush, forested regions of Washington's Puget Sound area and into the dramatic Pacific Northwest terrain. Approaching Vancouver, you'll notice the subtle shift from American to Canadian infrastructure and customs procedures, with the coastal mountains growing ever more prominent. The entire drive encompasses significant elevation changes—from sea level in San Francisco to over 4,000 feet in the Cascade passes and back down again—so plan for varied road conditions and take breaks in the major cities along the way.
Late spring through early fall represents the ideal window for this journey, when mountain passes are clear and the weather is most cooperative. Winter driving through the Cascades and into Washington can be treacherous, with snow and ice creating hazardous conditions that may force closures or significantly extend your travel time.
The 795-mile drive from San Francisco, California to Vancouver, British Columbia takes approximately 15h 54m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.
Common Weather Hazards on This Route
- Winter storms and heavy snowfall (November through April)
- Black ice on mountain passes and bridges
- Dense fog, especially during early morning hours
- Extreme heat and dust storms in desert regions
- Flash floods during monsoon season (July through September)
Seasonal Driving Considerations
Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges — afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.
