Driving from Tucson, AZ to Seattle, WA

Your journey from Tucson to Seattle spans approximately 1,584 miles and will take you roughly 26 and a half hours of driving time, making this an ideal two-day road trip with an overnight stop somewhere in the middle. You'll primarily follow Interstate 10 north out of Tucson before connecting to Interstate 17 heading northward through Arizona, then transitioning to US Route 93 as you enter Nevada. From there, you'll pick up Interstate 90, which becomes your main corridor all the way through Idaho and into Washington, finally bringing you into the Seattle metropolitan area. This routing takes you through some of the most dramatic terrain transitions in the American West, so understanding the route's progression will help you prepare for what lies ahead.

As you depart Tucson's desert landscape at roughly 2,400 feet elevation, you'll experience significant topographical changes fairly quickly. The drive north through Arizona showcases the transition from Sonoran Desert scrubland into the higher elevations of central Arizona, where you'll pass through Flagstaff at nearly 7,000 feet—a notable elevation gain that can affect vehicle performance and fuel efficiency. Once you cross into Nevada via US 93, the terrain becomes increasingly sparse and mountainous, with long stretches of high desert punctuated by small towns like Kingman. By the time you reach Idaho on Interstate 90, you'll have entered the northern Rocky Mountain region, where pine forests, mountain passes, and dramatic river canyons define the landscape all the way to Washington.

You'll pass through or near several notable cities and landmarks that break up the drive nicely. Flagstaff offers a pleasant urban respite in Arizona's high country, while Spokane, Washington—your last major city before Seattle—provides another good opportunity to stretch your legs and grab supplies before the final push westward. The stretch through northern Idaho and eastern Washington features some spectacular scenery, including portions of the Columbia River Gorge as you approach Seattle.

Spring through early fall represents the optimal driving window for this route, as winter conditions in the mountain passes—particularly in Idaho and eastern Washington—can create hazardous driving situations. Summer offers the most reliable conditions, though the desert sections south of Flagstaff can be brutally hot, so plan accordingly with extra water and fuel stops in mind.

The 1584-mile drive from Tucson, Arizona to Seattle, Washington takes approximately 26h 33m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.

Common Weather Hazards on This Route

  • Dense fog, especially during early morning hours
  • Extreme heat and dust storms in desert regions
  • Flash floods during monsoon season (July through September)

Seasonal Driving Considerations

Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges — afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.

Best Time to Drive Tucson to Seattle

For long drives like this 1584-mile journey, planning is essential. Consider breaking the trip into segments if weather looks challenging. The best approach is to check conditions for multiple departure times using Route Outlook's optimizer, which considers weather at each point when you'll actually be there.

Driving Strategy

Covering 1584 miles from Tucson to Seattle is a full-day or multi-day drive that requires advance planning. Break the route into manageable segments, planning fuel and rest stops every 2-3 hours. Weather that looks fine at departure may deteriorate significantly at the midpoint. Consider booking overnight accommodation if the forecast shows deteriorating conditions in the latter half. Route Outlook's segment-level weather data helps you identify exactly where and when conditions will change.

Pro Tip

Use Route Outlook's departure optimizer to find the best time to leave. Our 4D trajectory engine considers weather at each point along your route at the exact time you'll be there — not just at your destination. It also integrates live data from traffic cameras, DOT 511 feeds, and road weather sensors.
