Driving from Portland, OR to Moab, UT

The journey from Portland to Moab takes you nearly 1,100 miles across some of the American West's most dramatic terrain, primarily following Interstate 84 east through Oregon before transitioning to a network of highways that will carry you through Idaho, Wyoming, and finally into Utah's red rock country. You'll begin by heading east on I-84, tracing the scenic Columbia River Gorge as it cuts through the Cascade Range, then continue past Pendleton, Oregon, where the landscape gradually transitions from forested mountains to the high desert plateau. Once you cross into Idaho, you'll pick up I-80 near the state border, a major east-west corridor that will carry you across the Snake River Plain and into Wyoming. As you approach the Utah border, you'll likely take US Route 30 or continue on I-80 before heading south through Price, Utah, and finally connecting to US Route 191, which delivers you straight into Moab through some of the most stunning slickrock and canyon country on the continent.

Expect significant elevation changes throughout this drive, beginning at sea level in Portland and climbing steadily as you traverse multiple mountain passes before descending into the Wyoming Basin, then rising again as you approach the Colorado Plateau. The first half of your journey through Oregon and Idaho features rolling terrain and agricultural valleys, with the Blue Mountains and various forest zones dominating the landscape. The dramatic shift comes once you cross into Utah, where the terrain transforms into otherworldly red and orange sandstone formations, deep canyon systems, and vast desert vistas that make the final 150 miles feel like entering an entirely different world. You'll pass through the bustling city of Boise, Idaho, and smaller communities like Laramie, Wyoming, with long stretches of rural highway between towns where services and gas stations become increasingly important to plan for.

This drive is best undertaken in spring or fall when temperatures are moderate and visibility is excellent. Summer heat can be intense, particularly through the Utah portion, while winter snow in the mountain passes between Oregon and Wyoming can make conditions hazardous and significantly extend your travel time.

The 1072-mile drive from Portland, Oregon to Moab, Utah takes approximately 17h 58m under normal conditions. Weather along this route can vary significantly, especially through mountainous terrain where elevation changes can bring sudden weather shifts. Route Outlook helps you find the safest time to travel by showing you weather conditions at every point along your route, timed to when you'll actually be there.

Common Weather Hazards on This Route

  • Winter storms and heavy snowfall (November through April)
  • Black ice on mountain passes and bridges
  • Dense fog, especially during early morning hours

Seasonal Driving Considerations

Mountain passes along this corridor can be treacherous from October through May, with chain requirements, road closures, and whiteout conditions at higher elevations. Summer brings its own challenges — afternoon thunderstorms are common above 7,000 feet, and construction season narrows lanes on key highways. Always check pass conditions before departing, and carry emergency supplies during the colder months.
